The sketch above is an example of a sketch that uses the hatching and cross-hatching techniques. Do you know what hatching and cross-hatching techniques are? We will learn about shading in drawing or art. Let's get started!
What is Shading in Drawing and Art?
In drawing, shading is the process of adding lines to certain objects to give the impression that the objects are three-dimensional. Blending pencils together creates light and dark areas on an object. To achieve a realistic appearance, shading is typically completed after the creation of a basic sketch.
2 Types of Shading Techniques
1. Hatching Techniques
Drawing lines in a single direction, whether horizontal, vertical, or oblique, is known as the hatching shading technique. The lines need to be thicker when applying the hatching technique to the core shadow. Meanwhile, the lines need to be fewer when applying the hatching technique in the bright areas. One example of the hatching technique in building drawings is shading bricks.
Shading Bricks |
How to do it?
- Give full shading to several random bricks.
- In the first row, draw lines horizontally, slanted from bottom right to top left, vertically, slanted from bottom left to top right on the brick object.
- In the second row, draw lines in different direction to the lines above it.
- Do number (2) in the next row.
2. Cross Hatching Techniques
A shading technique called cross-hatching blends two or more basic hatchings together. The shading technique uses overlapped lines to create the appearance of a weave. The lines drawn on the lighter parts should be spaced far apart. Meanwhile, the lines drawn on the darker parts should be closely spaced. This shading method in building drawings is usually used to shade walls or shadows.
Therefore, there are two types of shading techniques that are mostly used in drawing architecture, namely hatching and cross-hatching techniques. Once you have mastered these two shading techniques, continue learning about highlight, core shadow, and cast shadow.
