How to Draw Old Colony House, US

Old Colony House is a brick Georgian-style building located at the east end of Washington Square in the city of Newport, Rhode Island, United States. This structure served as the colonial legislature's meeting venue. In this article, I explain how to draw the building in easy steps.

Tools I Used:

  • Paper size: A5 (148 x 210 mm)
  • Drawing pens: 0.03, 0.1
  • Pencil: B
  • Eraser
  • Straight ruler (20 cm)

Step 1 - Making Basic Lines

Start making basic lines from the middle of the building. Draw lines 16 cm long and 4.7 cm high and draw rectangular shapes. Divide the section horizontally into two parts. Draw basic lines for the roof of the building, top length 12.5 cm, bottom length according to the middle of the building that has been drawn, and height 1.5 cm. In the center of the roof, draw a third of a hexagon for the clock area. Draw the bottom of the building with a height of 1.4 cm and a length that matches the middle of the building. For the top part of the building, draw 3 rectangles, a circle, and an acute triangle on top. Draw a railing for the top of the roof.

To make the doors, we have to find the middle point, namely by dividing the length of the building into 2, so 16 cm divided by 2 is 8. We will make the door with a length of 2 cm, so the door is in the 7th to 9th cm.

Draw windows on each part of the building. We will make a roof window with a height of 1 cm, a middle window of 1.5 cm, a bottom window of 7mm, and the length of each window is 1 cm.

Step 2 - Detailing

Start detailing each window. Draw lines to form squares. Do the same with the doors. For the doors, use 2 layers of lines. Draw the railings for the 3rd-floor door, the bottom stairs, and the railing. Draw a clock on the roof of the building, and 2 circles beside it. Make square lines at the very top of the building. Draw horizontal lines at the bottom of the building (side of the bottom window). Draw lines in the middle of the building and one-third of the hexagon for the brick area in a zigzag manner.

Thick the lines that have been drawn using drawing pens 0.03 and 0.1. Shade full the bricks randomly. Use the hatching method to shade the bricks. Do the same for one-third of the hexagon. To shade the roof, we can use the 2 layers cross-hatching method. To find out more about hatching and cross-hatching methods, you can click it.

Therefore, the first step in drawing the Old Colony House is making basic lines, and then making final lines and detailing. If you already understand how to make it, you can practice these steps. Because architectural drawing is not only about understanding theory but also you have to practice it.
